Heather Voris was displaced from the Phar-Mor Corporation advertising agency in July of 2002, after having worked there for almost five years. She worked as a graphic designer, and while employed there, started attending classes at Youngstown State University to get a degree. When she was laid off, she was about a year and a half away from finishing her Bachelor’s degree. She had a lot of experience in the advertising field, but without credentials, it was difficult to find a decent job. A former co-worker told her about the tuition assistance opportunities at the Mahoning and Columbiana Training Association. 

Upon meeting the eligibility requirements and being approved for funding, she found the MCTA staff to be very dedicated and concerned about the success of each and every customer from "day one." Through various tests and assessments, she and her Career Consultant analyzed results, clarified goals, and developed a sequential, achievable plan. The structure of the MCTA requirements contributed to the timely completion of her degree.

While under the “wing” of her MCTA advisor, Heather strove to be successful in order to make her Career Counselor proud, too. She credits the support and structure of MCTA for encouraging her to do her best.

Heather earned an internship during the summer of 2003 at Humility of Mary Health Partners, which led to a temporary part-time position and finally a full-time position in April, with an impressive wage and benefit package.

Now that school is finished, she is currently working in her chosen field as a Graphic Designer doing medical illustration and computer design. Heather appreciates all the guidance through MCTA, which helped her to accomplish her employment goals with a focus on future opportunities.
