Adult Basic & Literacy Information

The mission of the Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) section is to develop, improve, and expand educational opportunities for adults in their roles as learners, family members, community members and workers by empowering quality programs in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Adult Basic and Literacy Education programs, services, and activities.

Classroom Training

Admissions Policy: Any adult may register for most classes regardless of previous background. There are no residential requirements. Since classes must be limited, registration must be conducted on a first come first serve basis. Register in person at the Adult Education Office located on the third floor of Choffin Career & Technical Center, Room 313 from 8:30am - 3:30pm, Monday through Friday or mail in registration. Some health-related courses may require a criminal background check and drug screening. Any Senior Citizens age sixty-five or older may register for any part-time class and receive a 10% discount on tuition.

Dental Assisting - Accredited
Choffin has only one of three programs in the state of Ohio that has received National Accreditation from the American Dental Association (ADA). This program provides education that is based on the latest procedures and techniques.

Dental Assisting - Radiology Program
This course is designed for the Dental Assistant that is currently employed in the dental field that would like to obtain a license in Radiology in the State of Ohio. This course is approved for seven hours of continuing education, toward national certification.

I. V. Therapy
This course is designed as a post-graduate course for the experienced Licensed Practical Nurse. The purpose of this class is to gain knowledge and skills for intravenous therapy as designed in the Ohio Board of Nursing Chapter 4723-17 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

Introduction to Medical Transcription
This course is designed to provide students with working knowledge of the transcription of medical reports. The student will gain skills in proofing documents by reviewing and applying medical terminology. All courses are 30 hours.

Medical Assisting
This is a comprehensive program covering several phases of medical assisting. This class covers the clinical, laboratory, and administrative
aspects of this medical profession. Academics, as well as hands-on experience are part of the curriculum.

Medical Billing
This course is designed to teach the skills necessary to be employed in a medical billing facility or a physician's office. The student will learn the steps to process medical insurance claims from the patient information form to the explanation of medical benefits.

Medical Coding
This course teaches the steps and principles of the ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems with focus on practice exercises to reinforce proper coding procedures.

Medical Office Manager
This is an introductory course in the procedures for managing a medical office or facility. Topics covered include; Management of Human Resources, Customer Service, and Internal Information. This course will teach organization and control of practice and procedures.

Medical Terminology
This course gives students a firm foundation in medical terminology. The student will master prefixes, roots, and suffixes that combine to form over 11,000 complex medical terms. This course is a prerequisite to entering many health occupation classes.

Nurse Aide
This is a state certified course to provide the student with training as well as prepare the student for the state certification exam. Course fee includes liability insurance and textbook.

PhlebotomyPractical Nursing – Accredited
The curriculum includes; Foundations of Nursing Practice, Nursing Assessment, Therapeutic Management, Anatomy and Physiology, Laboratory and Clinical Experience. Graduates of the Practical Nursing Program meet the Ohio Board of Nursing Requirements for eligibility to take the NCLEX-PN exam.  The program is nationally accredited by the National League for Nursing and North Central Association.

Professional Health Care Provider
This program is designed to prepare the graduate to assist professional staff in medical offices, acute and long term care facilities, and residential settings. Completion of all aspects of PHCPA Program will provide the graduate the opportunity to receive 12 additional semester hours of credit in Allied Health at YSU.

Surgical Technology – Accredited
The primary functions of a surgical technologist are to assist the surgeon and operating team, maintain the sterile field, and pass instruments. This comprehensive program includes course work in; Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Orientation to Surgical Technology, Prep for Surgery, Surgical Practices, Communication and Behavioral Sciences.  Upon completion and passing of the course, graduates are eligible to sit for the national certifying exam.

Precision Machining
This program is designed to provide a strong foundation in several areas of machining; Precision Instruments, Layout and Blueprint Calculation, Machining Math Calculation, Milling Machine, Lathe and Grinders, CNC.

Auto Mechanics Basics
Need to change your oil, check your fluid levels, change a tire, check your timing, or tune-up your car? Do you know what to do if your car overheats of if you break a belt? No idea? Then this is the class for you.

Small Engine Repair
This course consists of instruction in the use, care, maintenance, and repair of small air-cooled engines used for the home, garden, lawn, and recreation. All classes are 48 hours.

CISCO Training
CISCO training will instruct students with computer training by combining practical applications with theory. Students will learn how to design, build, and maintain computer networks.

Computer Bootcamp
Learn how to use computers and how they can make your work simpler. This computer course is designed for beginner users who need instruction in the basic computer programs. It is designed to simplify technology for new users.

Exploring the World Wide Web
Learn the basic skills needed to get up and running with Microsoft Internet Explorer. Learn fundamental Internet concepts, navigate the Web, perform effective searches, and revisit sites. You'll explore many of the new features of the browser.

Microsoft PowerPoint 2000
Computer generated presentations are becoming the business standard. Learn to use PowerPoint to create presentations, overhead transparencies, and handouts easily with this software package.

Microsoft Publisher
Do you need to create a newsletter or brochure and don't know how? Do you struggle with columns and tables? Learn to create great-looking desktop publications with Microsoft Publisher.

Day Care Provider/CDA Credential Hours
This course provides the learner with a background including Child Development, Principals for Early Childhood Education, Care Giving, and Health and Safety Certification (First Aid, Communicable Disease, Child Abuse).  This course will provide additional in-depth curriculum needed to meet CDA requirements of 120 clock hours of formal child care education

Preschool First Aid
This course will provide six hours to meet CDA requirements for preschool first aid.

Preschool Communicable Disease
This course will provide six hours to meet CDA requirements for preschool communicable disease.

Basic Carpentry
This class is designed for students wanting to develop skills in the following areas: use of tools and materials, preparing the job site, foundations, floor framing, wall framing, and much more. 

Integrated Manufacturing Technologies
Integrated learning modules are designed to teach students technical skills in a variety of technical topics including: technical print reading, quality assurance, hydraulic, pneumatic, electricity, and automated material handling (robotics).  These modules have been designed to meet current international industry standards.  Six technical modules are presented using a rotational sequence.  Students can enter the rotation at any of the six modules and take them in any sequence. 

Blue Print Reading
An introduction for people with little or no experience in the interpretation of blueprints.  Develop the ability to visualize the shapes of objects and interpret dimensions, tolerances, machining operation, and shop notes found on common blueprints.  Students will make shop sketches and learn the basics of Standard Drafting, Welding symbols, Geometric tolerancing, and interpretation of metric drawings.

Interior Renovations
This class is for students wanting to learn the basics of carpentry, plumbing, electricity, drywall, ceramic tile, etc.  This course can be used for private do-it-yourself projects or as a springboard into any of the building trades. 

American Sign Language
Introductory course in deaf culture, deaf awareness and the history of the deaf community.  Introduction to manual alphabet, numbers, and beginning ASL vocabulary.

Cooking for Quick and Healthy Meals
Tired of fast food restaurants, but not enough time to cook?  Want better nutrition for you and your family?  Join us in learning how to make quick and healthy meals.

Cake Decorating
Impress your family and guests by designing a cake for that special occasion.  Let a professional with over twenty years of experience show you how.  You will be given premium icing recipes and will use them in making borders, flowers, lettering and unique designs.  This is a comprehensive course covering ALL aspects of cake design, from beginning techniques through wedding cakes. 

Hot and Cold Party Trays
Come learn to create fancy hors d’ouevre trays just like the pros.  The instructor will demonstrate the techniques, then you will have the opportunity to practice them yourself.  Taste samples in class and take some home to share. 

Introduction to Floral Design and Shop Management
Start a new career, learn to do your own wedding flowers, or just enjoy designing arrangements with flowers from your garden.  This course prepares you for an entry level position in a retail flower shop or sharpens your skills as a home garden hobbyist.  Supplies are extra and are approx. $5 – $8 per session.  You will take the floral arrangement home after each session.

Advanced Floral Design
Prerequisite: Intro to Floral Design & Shop Management.  This class will begin where Intro to Floral Design & Shop Management left off.  Students will be given a deeper working knowledge of balance, form, color, and design.  Wedding and funeral design will be covered.  Supplies are extra and approx. $10.00 per session.  

Photography
Do you wish your photos could be better?  Would you like to take more pictures that you can be proud of?  Whether you have a “point and shoot” camera or an expensive one with interchangeable lenses, there are some simple “tricks of the trade” that can help you produce better quality photos.  Supplies are extra.

Aerobics
Join us in getting fit!  A combination of aerobic, body toning, and flexibility exercise will be included in the class.  Heart rates will be monitored.  Please bring a towel and wear exercise clothing, including aerobic or cross-training shoes. 

Spanish
Designed with the beginning student in mind, this course focuses on the development of grammatical structure, vocabulary, and basic conversational skills.
